Your journey begins at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, where our team will greet you upon arrival. Before starting your road adventure, you’ll enjoy a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley. The trip then moves forward with a scenic drive to Pokhara and continues to Kagbeni. From there, you’ll head to Charang (Tsarang), where you’ll hike to Luri Cave and explore its wonders.

Next, you’ll visit Lo Manthang, where you’ll have the chance to explore Chosar Cave and the nearby village. The adventure continues with a hike to Ghar Gompa before driving through Chhusang and onward to Muktinath. Finally, you’ll return to Pokhara and then head back to Kathmandu for a farewell.

Best Time to Book

The ideal seasons for this adventure are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), as these months offer clear skies, mild weather, and dry conditions, perfect for sightseeing, hiking, and driving.

Since Upper Mustang is situated in a rain-shadow area, it experiences little rainfall year-round, making it possible to visit during the monsoon season. However, winter (December-February) is best avoided due to the cold temperatures and heavy snowfall, which can make the journey more difficult.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel. This day is typically reserved for rest and preparation for the exciting journey ahead. You can use the evening to explore the vibrant streets of Kathmandu, enjoy local cuisine, and familiarize yourself with the cultural and historical richness of the city. A pre-trip briefing will also be arranged, where the guide will provide an overview of the itinerary and address any questions you may have.

The second day kicks off with a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley, where you’ll visit some of the most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The tour typically includes Swayambhunath Stupa (also known as the Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and the ancient Durbar Squares of Kathmandu. These sites offer a glimpse into Nepal’s rich culture, history, and religious traditions. In the afternoon, you will return to your hotel to prepare for the journey to Pokhara the following day.

Today, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Pokhara, a picturesque city known for its lakes and stunning mountain views. The journey takes about 6 hours and passes through beautiful landscapes, including green hills, terraced fields, and small villages. Once you arrive in Pokhara, you’ll have the chance to unwind at the shore of Phewa Lake, take a stroll along the lively streets, and enjoy the view of the majestic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in the distance.

From Pokhara, you’ll begin your drive to Kagbeni, which marks the entrance to the restricted Upper Mustang region. The 8-hour journey takes you through stunning valleys and mountainous terrains. Along the way, you’ll pass through Jomsom, the administrative center of the Mustang region, known for its wind-swept terrain and incredible views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. Kagbeni is an ancient village, and upon arrival, you’ll have time to explore its winding alleys, ancient monasteries, and mud-brick houses, all set against the backdrop of rugged landscapes.

On the fifth day, you’ll drive from Kagbeni to Charang (also known as Tsarang), one of the most culturally significant villages in Upper Mustang. As you ascend, the landscape transitions into an arid, desert-like environment, typical of the Tibetan Plateau. The drive will take you through remote settlements, offering glimpses of traditional Tibetan lifestyles and customs. Once you arrive in Charang, you’ll explore the village’s notable landmarks, including the old Charang Monastery and the White Dzong, a fortress-like palace perched on a hill.

Today, you will embark on a short but fascinating hike to the Luri Cave, one of the hidden gems of the Upper Mustang region. This ancient cave monastery is known for its sacred Buddhist murals and religious relics, which date back to the 13th century. The hike provides a glimpse into the region’s spiritual heritage and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. After exploring the Luri Cave, you will return to Charang for the night.

After breakfast, you’ll continue your journey deeper into the Upper Mustang region, driving towards the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, the former capital of the Kingdom of Mustang. This day’s drive covers approximately 13 kilometers and takes you through an otherworldly landscape of canyons, caves, and stark cliffs. Upon arriving in Lo Manthang, you’ll have time to explore its rich history and culture. The city is home to several ancient monasteries, the King’s Palace, and a network of narrow streets that lead to hidden treasures around every corner.

Today is dedicated to exploring the Chosar Cave and the Chosar Village, located near Lo Manthang. The cave is a remarkable structure, carved into a cliff and used for centuries by monks for meditation and religious practices. It contains intricate murals, Buddhist statues, and meditation chambers, making it a fascinating site for those interested in ancient Tibetan culture. Afterward, you’ll return to Charang, where you can reflect on your journey through this historic region.

On the ninth day, you’ll take a scenic hike to Ghar Gompa, an ancient monastery said to be one of the oldest in the region. The gompa is believed to hold significant spiritual energy and is a revered pilgrimage site for both locals and visitors. The hike itself offers breathtaking views of the Mustang Valley and surrounding peaks. After spending some time exploring the monastery and taking in the panoramic vistas, you will return to Charang for the night.

Today’s journey takes you back towards Jomsom, covering about 37 kilometers through rugged terrain. The drive will take approximately 8-9 hours, giving you ample time to enjoy the stark beauty of the Upper Mustang landscape one last time. Jomsom is located in the Kali Gandaki Valley and is known for its stunning mountain views and strong winds, which are characteristic of this region. You’ll spend the night in Jomsom, preparing for your return to Pokhara the next day.

You will leave Jomsom in the morning and begin the scenic drive back to Pokhara, retracing your route through the lush landscapes of the lower Mustang region. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you can relax by the lake, enjoy a meal at one of the city’s many restaurants, or simply take in the serene views of the mountains and lakes. This day is reserved for rest and relaxation after your long journey.

This is your final day in Nepal, you’ll be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu for your departure flight. Our team will ensure that you reach the airport on time for your flight, and you’ll leave with unforgettable memories of your time in Upper Mustang. For those who plan to extend their stay, this day can be used for further exploration of Kathmandu or other regions in Nepal.
