Route Overview:

After a brief sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, you’ll take a scenic flight to Pokhara and then to Jomsom, where the trek officially begins. From Jomsom, the route leads through Kagbeni, Muktinath, Chusang, Geling, and Charang, before reaching the ancient kingdom of Lo-Manthang. After exploring Lo-Manthang and its surrounding areas, the trek continues to Chogo La, the highest point of the trek, before descending back to Jomsom via Ghami and Dhakmar. The trip concludes with a return flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, followed by a flight back to Kathmandu.

Difficulty Level:

While the Upper Mustang trek includes short hikes, it requires physical fitness due to the region’s high elevation and challenging terrain. Acclimatization is crucial, as the altitude reaches 3,840 meters (12,595 feet), and there’s a risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Best Time to Visit:

The trek is feasible almost year-round, but the best seasons are spring, autumn, and summer. Upper Mustang’s dry and sunny summer weather makes it ideal for trekking, with well-maintained trails and clear mountain views.

Summer Trekking:

Upper Mustang is protected from heavy monsoons as it lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna range, making summer an excellent time to visit. While the lower Mustang region may experience damp conditions, the natural beauty during this season is enhanced, with vibrant rivers and lush landscapes.

This day allows you to prepare for the trek ahead and offers an opportunity to engage with fellow trekkers.

The morning of Day 2 begins with a half-day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu’s historical and spiritual landmarks. You’ll visit Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu temples, and Boudhanath Stupa, an important pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. The tour continues to Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), offering panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. In the afternoon, you’ll board a scenic flight to Pokhara, a city renowned for its serene lakes and stunning mountain views.

On Day 3, an early morning flight takes you from Pokhara to Jomsom, the gateway to Upper Mustang. The flight offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. After arriving in Jomsom, the trek officially begins as you hike towards Kagbeni, a traditional village that marks the entry to Upper Mustang. This first day of trekking allows you to experience the stark beauty of Mustang’s barren landscape.

On Day 4, the trek continues from Kagbeni to the sacred town of Muktinath, a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktinath offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, and its temples and eternal flame make it a spiritually enriching experience. Along the way, you’ll pass through arid landscapes, wind-swept canyons, and traditional Mustang villages.

The journey on Day 5 takes you deeper into the Mustang region, as you trek from Muktinath to the village of Chele. Passing through Chusang, you’ll witness stunning rock formations and cliffs, which are a characteristic feature of the Mustang terrain. The trek becomes more challenging as you ascend to higher altitudes, but the breathtaking views of barren valleys and towering peaks make it worth the effort.

On Day 6, the trek takes you from Chele to Geling, a traditional Mustang village surrounded by towering hills.
